Yoga and Mindfulness for Children. Nourishing bright minds, kind hearts and brave spirits.
Our children live in a hurry‐up world of busy parents, school pressures, incessant lessons, competitive sports and a world of hyper-connectivity, on-line, all the time culture. We may not think of these influences as stressful for our kids, but often they are. The bustling pace of our children's lives can have a profound effect on their innate joy—and usually not for the better. Yoga and Mindfulness can help counter these pressures. When children learn techniques for self‐health, relaxation, awareness and inner fulfillment, they can navigate life's challenges with a little more ease.
Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that's non-competitive. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. Yoga also fosters cooperation and compassion—instead of opposition—which is a great gift to give our children. There are no rewards and no punishments, no winners or losers, no best or worst. The reward is the practice itself. Children find freedom in this, being in an environment where they feel free to express themselves without fear of judgment or criticism. This gives them enormous confidence as they continue to grow into themselves.
Mindfulness at a young age teaches kids how to pay attention. How to notice their distractions. They are so often told to do this - "Pay attention!" - in school or at home ... but few really have the tools to know how. Mindfulness improves attentiveness, awareness, social and emotional intelligence and provides a profound sense of calmness and inner peace. Mindfulness calms down their central nervous systems which in turn allows for better concentration on school work and other activities.
Both Yoga and Mindfulness teaches kids how to breathe properly, how to come into the present moment and to calm and focus their minds.
Incredible, invaluable life skills.
